Even though negotiations still continue on, it does not seem as though Time Warner will be able to work out a deal to continue airing Fox network programming. But it’s not just the Fox network and FX channel that Time Warner customers would be losing; other top networks will be lost as well.

Food Network – Every time I watch this channel it makes me hungry. The Food Network will be airing a special this weekend with Michelle Obama. The First Lady, Bobby and Mario will have a culinary competition on Sunday night at 8pm at the White house.

Fuel – Fuel channel is absolutely one of the best action channels on TV today. If you are an adrenaline junky this channel provides viewers inside access to top extreme sports stars. You get the best inside scoop into sports like Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Surfing, BMX, Wakeboarding, and MOTO. Also the ever popular Adventurous Danny and Dingo show.

Speed Channel – The name says it all, the Speed Channel covers anything that has to do with going fast. Whether its an inside look into Nascar, Formula One, Rally Cars or Motorcycles. The shows on the Speed Channel will keep you up to date with the latest automotive trends.

The Weather Channel – Gives you up to date forecast of the weather in your area. The Weather channel also tracks potential storms or heavy snowfall that could effect your location within the next week.

A free playstation?… ‘I’ll see what I can do’

How easy is it to get free stuff these days? This question keeps cropping up from friends and family who know me well for being an ‘I’ll see what I can do…’ sort of person.

Getting hold of shareware, freeware and countless samples these days is not a problem. With the invention of this new thangled thing called the interweb, free stuff like that is not a problem.

When my young nephew came to me and asked if I could get him a free playstation I couldn’t resist the challenge. Knowing full well this would be a virtually impossible task I didn’t promise his free playstation would be here any time soon.

In my eagerness I got straight on to Google and typed in ‘free playstation’, I like to keep it simple and straight to the point!

First site that caught my eye was freeplaystation.net …. Again straight to the point!

The site was simple and straight to the point, ‘3 steps to getting your hands on a free playstation’, this looks a bit too easy I thought to myself. Scrolling down to find the ‘all you have to do is sign up with your credit card details’ I was surprised to find nothing of the kind, just an information video from no less than BBC’s Newsnight program about getting free stuff.

The video explained how advertising companies are enticing people to take notice of their advertised products by giving away highly desirable items such as the iPod, iPhone and of course the Sony Playstation 3.

The catch? Well…. Where money is involved there isn’t one. Don’t think that they are giving away a playstation for free just for looking at an advert. The way this offer works is by you signing up, taking up a free trail and then getting your friends and family to do the same.

The site giving away the free stuff gets paid by the companies that they are showing ads for, providing that the user signs up for a free trial or at most spends £5 – £10 on an offer. The site then passes some of that money back to you as a free gift for referring your friends and family.

So basically this is a form of advertising, companies set aside a certain amount of cash to pay the advertiser just to get interest in their product. Fortunately for us some of that money gets passed down to us for the part we play i.e. telling our friends and family about the free playstation site.

Luckily for me, friends and family were quick to help out knowing the playstation was for little Billy, and all signed up for a 2 week trail at LoveFilm.com.

One month after signing up, the free play station arrived. My best ‘I’ll see what I can do’ moment yet!

How can I avoid turning an ankle during trail runs?

If you spend much time training on trails, wear shoes with thick soles and plenty of support, which will stabilize your footstrike and help prevent an ankle turn on rough surfaces. Trail shoes are designed for this; some running shoes will also suffice. Also, always keep your eyes on the trail immediately ahead so you can adapt your stride to any sudden terrain changes. And on the downhills, slightly shorten your stride. This will help you maintain better control and balance.

Can I count my bike time as training toward my running goals?

Generally you can, but you’ll probably have to spend more time in the saddle to get the same aerobic benefits as running. Cycling is a good alternative the day after a hard run. It strengthens muscles neglected by running, like the hamstrings and glutes, without the impact of running. In terms of aerobic ‘training effect,’ roughly 6km of cycling equates to 2km of running at the same intensity. But if you’re training for a race, no amount of cycling can take the place of running.

Is it okay to run in the morning if I also ran the night before?

Back-to-back workouts may be fine as long as both runs aren’t too taxing. If your evening workout was a long run or included fast-paced segments, keep the next morning’s run short and slow. Likewise, if you plan to do a long run or speedwork in the morning, keep your mileage the night before short and the pace easy. The key is to listen to your body. If you run in the evening and wake up feeling sore or fatigued, take the morning off or cross-train with some cycling or swimming. Many people need a full 24 to 48 hours between runs to fully recover, so don’t be disappointed if you can’t pull off this night/morning combo.

I have heard some of the older athletes in the club saying that they are doing less mileage with more rest and they are doing far better than they have in years. Can I do better with less training?

When it comes to preparing for a race, the rule of thumb will be the more you train, the better you perform.

Any athlete preparing for a race needs to establish a few ground rules: What are my goals? Do my goals match my ability? Do my goals match the time I have available to train? And do my goals match my time available to recover? Once you have honestly answered these questions you can set up a program.

The key elements for a successful program are: Give yourself enough time to build up slowly, ensure adequate recovery and push yourself at appropriate times. You need to get to your high intensity and long duration sessions feeling fresh. This is where your ‘older’ athletes have had to adjust their program. They need extra time to recover so that they can perform well when it is required.

Monitor how you feel each day, your resting heart rate, how tired your legs are and how much sleep you are getting. As long as these aspects are monitored correctly then the adage ‘The more I train, the better I perform’ will become a reality. If you are not managing the above then you need to reduce your volumes or intensities, or both.

A missing or lame Objective section can get your resume tossed in the trash in a matter of seconds. There are quite simply too many better resumes out there to bother with yours. Yet most job seekers do a poor job with the objective.

Here a resume writing tip: toward the top just above your “Keyword Competencies” paragraph, put your “Objective” section which is quite simply the object of your job search, the title of the job you are seeking.

Here’s a Bad Example:

Most people put in a title such as “Software Developer” or, “Lighthouse Keeper” or, “Marketing Director” or “Product Manager” or “NASCAR Pit Boss” in some long droning sentence that reads like:

Objective:

“Challenging opportunity as a (title) where I can effectively use my managing and sales skills in my ongoing effort to help grow an organization, blah, blah…”

This is not only boring, it’s also highly ineffective. Your resume has only so much available space and your potential reader so little time. This sort of verbiage does not transmit key information that will widen your net.

Use the “Objective” to do one thing, focus on your objective.

Here’s a Better Example:

Instead of just filling out the target title as “JAVA Programmer”, for instance, also list other closely allied titles that the searcher may be searching on. For instance:

Objective:

“Java Programmer, Software Engineer, Application Developer, Software Developer.”

Use each section in your resume to answer one question only. By putting several potential titles in the Objective heading (and leaving out the skill-set info of the first example), you tighten up your focus and you widen your net. Even within larger companies, there may be several different job requisitions at any one time. For example, it hasn’t been uncommon for a company to have concurrent openings for “Java Programmer”, “Software Developer”, “Software Engineer”, all of which you may well be qualified for. So don’t limit yourself with your objective title. Use this space to your best advantage and you will reap greater returns.
