Infant Sprinkling?

Jesus was our example in all righteousness and our Great High Priest. (Matthew 3:12-17 and Hebrews 4:15) He waited until age thirty to be baptized and start his ministry. Afterwards Satan tempted him in the wilderness, Matthew 4:1-11. (An allegory of the world.)That should tell us all something. One must be a believer prior to baptism. (Acts 8:26-40) And that we receive the Holy Spirit; even as Jesus did in allegoric manner. (Romans 6:4, Galatians 3:27, and Mark 1:9-13) Now we go to the Roman Church and it’s practices in baptism. As it admits that immersion was the original practice, without the use of baptismal fonts (like it now uses): In the Apostolic Age, as in Jewish times (John 3:23), baptism was administered without special fonts, at the seaside or in streams or pools of water (Acts 8:38); Tertullian refers to St. Peter’s baptizing in the Tiber (De bapt., iv); similarly; in later periods of evangelization, missionaries baptized in rivers as is narrated of St. Paulinus in England by Bede (Hist. Eccl., II, xiv-xvi). (Peterson JB. Transcribed by the Cloistered Dominican Nuns. Baptismal Font. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II. Copyright © 1907 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York). The word Baptism is derived from the Greek word, bapto, or baptizo, to wash or to immerse. It signifies, therefore, that washing is of the essential idea of the sacrament…The most ancient form usually employed was unquestionably immersion. This is not only evident from the writings of the Fathers and the early rituals of both the Latin and Oriental Churches, but it can also be gathered from the Epistles of St. Paul, who speaks of baptism as a bath (Ephesians 5:26; Romans 6:4; Titus 3:5). In the Latin Church, immersion seems to have prevailed until the twelfth century. After that time it is found in some places even as late as the sixteenth century. Infusion and aspersion, however, were growing common in the thirteenth century and gradually prevailed in the Western Church. The Oriental Churches have retained immersion (Fanning, William H.W. Transcribed by Charles Sweeney, S.J. Baptism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II. Published 1907. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York). 1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out (Greek baptizein) means to “plunge” or “immerse”; the “plunge” into water symbolizes the catechumen’s burial into Christ’s death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as “a new creature” (Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 342).

Notice that The Catholic Encyclopedia admits that immersion was the biblical practice, the practice of the early Church, and was slowly dropped in the Latin/Western Church. Hence it admits that it is not faithful to the original practice of baptism. Also notice that the Catechism of the Catholic Church admits that baptism is a plunging/immersion that shows a burial and resurrection, but this certainly is not the ceremony that they use of infants (which most likely are the majority of those baptized by Roman Catholics).

Another bizarre practice that some claim used to be involved with compromised”Christianity” was nude baptism. Notice the following: In at least some churches…the candidate was baptized naked, the children first, then the men, and finally the women. No one was to take into the water anything except his body (Latourette KS. A History of Christianity, Volume 1: to A.D. 1500. HarperCollins, San Francisco, 1975, p. 194).

As the Bible in no way endorses (nor records) nude baptism, the above demonstrates that pagan practices were used for people who professed, but apparently did not understand, Christ. Of the 100 or so times the terms Baptism, baptize, baptized, etc. are used of those in the New Testament, there is never one time that infants or young children are specifically mentioned as being baptized.

Notice what what Catholic named Jodocus Tiletanus admitted, We are not satisfied with that which the apostles or the Gospel do declare, but we say that, as well as before as after, there are divers matters of importance and weight accepted and received out of a doctrine which is NOWHERE SET FORTH IN WRITING. For we do blesse the water wherewith we baptize, and the oyle wherewith we annoynt; yea and besides that, him that is christened. And (I pray you) OUT OF WHAT SCRIPTURE have we learned the same? HAVE WE NOT IT OF A SECRET AND UNWRITTEN ORDINANCE? And further what scripture hath taught us to grease with oyle? Yea, I pray you, whence cometh it, that we do dype the child three times in that water? Doth it not come out of this hidden and undisclosed doctrine, which our forefathers have received closely without any curiosity, and do observe it still? (Harvet, Gentianus. Review of Epistles, PP. 19B, 20A, London 1598, as quoted by Hislop, A in The Two Babyons, emphasis mine).

Hence it is known that infant baptism is not from scripture and that somehow it entered Catholicism from a secret ordinance. Furthermore, the Catholic Church itself teaches that following about baptism: Baptismal vows The name popularly given to the renunciations required of an adult candidate for baptism just before the sacrament is conferred. In the case of infant baptism, they are made in the name of the child by the sponsors (Delany J.F. Transcribed by Janet Grayson. Baptismal Vows. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II. Published 1907. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

However, since a baby cannot repent nor confess belief in Christ, any statement by an adult sponsor cannot be imputed to the baby. That is one of the most important reasons why infant baptism is not appropriate. The Catechism of the Catholic Church sort of even admits that when it states: 1231…By its very nature infant baptism requires a post-baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after Baptism, but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth…1254 For all the baptized, children or adults, faith must grow after Baptism…1255 For the grace of Baptism to unfold, the parents help is important. So too, is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized–child or adult–on the road to the Christian life. There task is a truluy ecclesial function (officium) (Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, pp. 342,351).

What is a required post-baptismal catechumenate? The statement does not make logical sense (as the dictionary definition of catechumenate does not seem to mean “godparents”, it seems to mean one new to the faith instead, which is about the same definition of a catechumen). More importantly, an infant does not have any faith to begin with, hence does not the have faith that grows after baptism. An infant is incapable of repentance and no one can repent for someone else (the Bible, in Philippians 2:12 teaches, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”).

In addition, there is nothing in the entire Bible that suggests that any “godparents” are assigned to either children or adults after baptism (there also is no example of infant baptism in the entire Bible). How can “the role of the godfather and godmother” be an important and ecclesial function if it is not even mentioned in the Bible? It is also not mentioned in any early Christian writings. Infant baptism probably did not become widely practiced until the third or fourth centuries (and not universally done in the Roman/Orthodox faiths until even later).

The Catholic Encyclopedia noted: Infant baptism has, however, been the subject of much dispute. The Waldenses and Cathari and later the Anabaptists, rejected the doctrine that infants are capable of receiving valid baptism, and some sectarians at the present day hold the same opinion (Fanning, William H.W. Transcribed by Charles Sweeney, S.J. Baptism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II. Published 1907. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York). Furthermore The Catholic Encyclopedia also recognizes: Persons rejecting infant baptism are frequently mentioned in English history in the sixteenth century (Weber N.A. Transcribed by Robert H. Sarkissian. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II. Published 1907. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, 1907. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Martin Luther also got these statements confirmed, Article IX: Of Baptism. Of Baptism they teach that it is necessary to salvation, and that through Baptism is offered the grace of God, and that children are to be baptized who, being offered to God through Baptism are received into God’s grace. They condemn the Anabaptists, who reject the baptism of children (The Confession of Faith: Which Was Submitted to His Imperial Majesty Charles V. At the Diet of Augsburg in the Year 1530. by Philip Melanchthon, 1497-1560. Translated by F. Bente and W. H. T. Dau. Published in: Triglot Concordia: The Symbolical Books of the Ev. Lutheran Church. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1921, pp. 37-95.)

Thus Martin Luther not only encouraged infant baptism, his supporters condemned those who opposed infant baptism. Nor was he the only one. Sadly, notice the following account: Calvin, who could smile with complacency over the tortures of those who refused to be governed by his own opinions; and Zuinglius, who, when questioned regarding the fate of certain Anabaptists, replied, “Drown the Dippers” (Davis, Tamar. A General History of the Sabbatarian Churches. 1851; Reprinted 1995 by Commonwealth Publishing, Salt Lake City, p. 106).

Yet, the Bible shows that those who received John’s baptism had to be “re-baptized” into the name of Jesus (Acts 19:3-5) and that those baptized needed to repent. That is something that infants simply cannot do. Recall that the Apostle Peter taught, Repent, and be baptized everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission (Forgiveness is it’s equal.) of sins (Acts 2:38)

And the Bible states: Then those that gladly received his word were baptized (Acts 2:42).

Christian baptism cannot include those who cannot repent. Nor those without faith as Jesus said he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: But he that believeth not (James 2:26 said, faith without works proving it was dead.) shall be damned. (Mark 16:16) No where in the word of God are infants baptized. And no other name is ever used, except the one of the Lord Jesus Christ. Justin Martyr in 145 AD changed the baptismal formula from simply in the name of Jesus in some form, to this: For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water. And this washing is called illumination, because they who learn these things are illuminated in their understandings. (First Apology 61). Clearly infant baptism and trinity baptism are non scriptural acts of apostate men. The word of God will judge us in the last day. Not traditions of men that take away or void the meaning of scriptures. We ought to obey God and not men, said Peter in Acts 5:29. Jesus said if we loved him we would keep his commandments. (John 14:15/15:140 Baptism was commanded by him for all believers in his name. (Mark 16:16, Luke 24:47, and Acts 2:38 through 22:16) Today we must not harden our hearts nor disobey his word. That is if we expect to please the one who has called us by name to his grace, which is only possible by our faith. (Ephesians 2:8-10) We must be baptized into the only way found throughout the scriptures. (John 14:6) In the all power filled and saving name of Jesus. (Matthew 28:18, 1 Corinthians 1:24, and Acts 4:12)

Las Vegas Area Destinations: Red Rock Canyon

Las Vegas Area Destinations: Red Rock Canyon

This destination will be the perfect day get away on your next vacation to Las Vegas, Nevada. Spend the day or morning and be back enjoying the entertainment downtown by afternoon.

Located approximately 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is a perfect day trip for your Las Vegas vacation. Red Rock Canyon features a scenic drive that loops through the scenic canyon area, miles of hiking trails for a beginner or a seasoned veteran, a vast array of climbing opportunities, and many other activities for the whole family.

The scenic drive is around 13 miles in length and has pullouts and parking areas at all of the main attractions. Picnic areas are located just off of the asphalt surface. This is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the area without a lot of physical exertion.

There are 22 named trails in the area. My favorites are the Calico Hills and the Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Trail.

Calico Hills is an easy trail along the base of the towering fossilized sand dunes that comprise the Calico Hills. I cannot think of the correct adjectives to describe the views along the trails. Brilliant red intermingled with traditional sandstone coloring rising above you. The green vegetation along the bottoms and suspended along the slopes and ravines. This is not a steep trail, with the exception of the hike to and from the parking areas.

The Lost Creek Children’s Discovery trail is about a one mile hike and is easy enough for everyone. I take my young son (3 years) on this one. The trail crosses a dry wash and then with the aid of stairs climbs a portion of the hillside. The trail passes an ancient agave roasting pit used by the native people long ago. The interpretive signs describe some of the things they have found during excavations. Another area that you will pass is a camping area used seasonally by the native people. There are several natural overhangs and a few boulders that provide shade for a brief rest. Then it is on passed the springs that are being rehabilitated and back down to the parking area.

Lost Creek also has a picnic area that is perfect for lunch after your hike. The picnic area is situated at the end of the pavement and has several areas that you can explore. This is a very popular destination and you should try to get there early or just be patient and wait for an available table.

Rock climbing permits are available from the BLM office. You will need to visit their website to get the number to call. You must call ahead to get your permits. Climbing on the sandstone escarpments is not permitted for 24 hours following a rain storm. The Calico Hills area is very popular with rock climbers. It is amazing to watch someone start their climb and over time become just a colored dot high above you.

In addition to the sandstone there is an abundance of climbing opportunities in the limestone crags found throughout Red Rock Canyon and the entire area surrounding Las Vegas. Use caution and correct equipment at all times while climbing. Remember we want you to enjoy this area year after year.

The best times of the year to visit Red Rock Canyon are during the spring, winter and fall. However if you get an early start you can visit during the summer months. With daily highs at or above 100 degrees you will want to plan your visit carefully. Bring plenty of water at all times of the year.

Please remember that any damage that you do to this area cannot be undone. This is really a treasure for all to enjoy and should be left in as good of condition as when you arrived. Use the trash receptacles and respect the natural and native sites throughout.

The Custom Air Intake

One of the most popular performance upgrades for your car today is to install a custom air intake. The thing most don’t realize is whether you are trying to make your car faster or just save gas this is one of the easiest modifications available.

There are two types of custom air intakes:

  • Cold air intake
  • Short ram intake

You would choose your type of intake depending on the tempature where you live. If it’s hot outside then you would want to use the cold air intake, and if it’s cold outside you would use the short ram intake. The reason for this is you want cold air going in to the engine, the colder the air the better the performance, to a point. If you live in freezing tempature then that’s a little to cold and you would want to use the short ram system. With the cold air intake the idea is to draw in air as far away from the motor as possible to get the coldest air possible. With the short ram intake you want to draw your air from near the engine where it’s a little warmer.

So with cooler air we get better performance, but there is another benifit! When car manufactures build a car they want it to be as quite as possible, and how they do this is reduce the air flow and run it through lengths of tubing. So by removing the OEM air box and intake tube and replacing it with a K&N or Spectre intake tube and cone filter you make it easier for your car to breathe.

I know I said this is for everyone and you are thinking I don’t care about performance I want gas mileage! Well, if the engine performs better and doesn’t have to work as hard, in turn it will use less gas to power itself.

AND, on top of all this the different types of intake tubes and filter they have available giver your engine a personalized custom look that anyone can appreciate. For detailed intsructions on how to remove the stock intake and filter box and to purchase the custom intake visit my website at http://www.compactuner.com

Car Stereo Subwoofers: An Essential Car Audio Component

In any car audio system, the subwoofer must absolutely be present. It might not sound important at first, but if you remove the subwoofer component, there’s no bass left. A subwoofer by definition is a loudspeaker dedicated to producing low frequency sounds. Have you ever heard the booming beat screaming from a car? That’s the subwoofer at work. Of course, it’s turned past what the average car owner would have it at.

The top companies you’ll want to look for if you want to upgrade your car subwoofer are JL Audio, MTX Audio, and Kicker. These three are leading the car audio industry, all with early origins. JL Audio’s W7 line is one of the most advanced and most powerful subwoofer lines available on the market (pricey, but well worth it if you care about the quality). MTX Audio has released an amazing 60-inch subwoofer that holds the record for the size. They also have the largest consumer subwoofer that measures at 22 inches. Kicker’s L7 seems to be the best from the Kicker lineup, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be.

Cars usually carry their subwoofers in the trunk or back parts of the vehicle because of the lack of space. Subwoofers and their enclosures tend to take up more space than is expected. As such, fitting them into dashboards and doors is extremely difficult.

An interesting thing subwoofers are used for are volume competition, also known as SPL wars. SPL (sound pressure levels) get extremely high in these battles, and some companies decide to produce subwoofers geared extremely towards the SPL rather than the sound quality. Companies like JL Audio have focused on both SPL and sound quality, as shown in JL Audio’s W7 series.

When installing a car stereo subwoofer, it sometimes requires modifications to the vehicle itself. Obviously, each car is built differently, and that includes the space allowed for upgrades/changes like the subwoofer. If you want to shoot for a larger one or one with a different shape (although mostly circular, some subwoofers are square), it’s important to make sure you have the right size available; otherwise, its time to bust out tools to make it so that you have the right size.

Never assume that a smaller subwoofer is weaker. For example, JL Audio’s 8-inch W7 subwoofer is more powerful than some 12-inch subwoofers from other companies. Because of this, you must always read reviews on the subwoofer you’re looking at before buying it in case that smaller subwoofer is indeed weaker. If you keep with the more popular brands, though, you shouldn’t have many problems, because these have been reviewed many times over and won’t fail to deliver.
Car stereo subwoofers sound like enthusiast-only business, but they dig deeper than most people think.

Are Casual Clothes Enough For Motorcycle Ridding?

It is not known when humans began wearing clothes. Anthropologists logically presume that humans originally lived naked, without clothing, as their natural state. They postulate the adaptation of animal skins and vegetation into coverings to protect the wearer from cold, heat and rain, especially as humans migrated to new climates; alternatively, covering may have been invented first for other purposes, such as magic, decoration, cult, or prestige, and later found to be practical as well.

To the human, however, in his need to establish his place and purpose in the universe, the most important material is biological and the most important process is evolution, far it is only here that the human can learn to understand himself, an understanding that is vital to his survival.

According to archaeologists and anthropologists, the earliest clothing probably consisted of fur, leather, leaves or grass, draped, wrapped or tied about the body for protection from the elements. Knowledge of such clothing remains inferential, since clothing materials deteriorate quickly compared to stone, bone, shell and metal artifacts. Archeologists have identified very early sewing needles of bone and ivory from about 30,000 BC, found near Kostenki, Russia, in 1988.

With the passage of time humans make tremendous success in every field of life. With the evolution of wheels human make tremendous success in the field of vehicles and clothing’s. There are numerous vehicles running on the road every day. Amongst them motorcycle is the most popular one.

A motorcycle (also called a motor bicycle, motorbike, bike, or cycle) is a single-track two-wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycles vary considerably depending on the task for which they are designed, such as long distance travel, navigating congested urban traffic, cruising, sport and racing, or off-road conditions. Being the most affordable form of motorized transport, in some parts of the world they are also the most widespread (e.g., Vietnam)

Motorcycling is a more dangerous means of transport than other road alternatives: the relative risk of a motorcycle rider being killed or seriously injured per kilometer travelled is around 54 times higher in 2006 than for car drivers. However, motorcycling is less dangerous than many other popular outdoor recreational activities, including horseback riding.

To address safety issues, motorcycle safety training and equipment is important for motorcyclists’ survival on the road and mandated in many countries and several U.S. states and counties.

The casual dresses which we use to wear in ordinary circumstances are not enough for motorcycling. You are nude if you wear these clothes during a ride. This is very dangerous to wear these clothes during motorcycle ridding because these are too light.

So to improve motorcycle safety many countries order the wearing of protective clothing by motorcyclists, especially a helmet. Other protective equipment may include certain types of jackets, gloves, boots, and pants. Jackets meant for motorcyclists are typically made of nylon, leather, or Kevlar. These jackets usually include heavy padding on the elbow, spine, and shoulder regions. Gloves are generally made of leather or Kevlar and some include carbon fiber knuckle protection. Boots, especially those for sport riding, include reinforcement and plastic caps on the ankle and toe areas. A well-protected motorcyclist will wear boots with heels that fit on motorcycle foot rests (pegs) and provide good ankle support. Pants are usually leather, nylon, or Kevlar. Except for helmets, none of these items are required by law in any state in the U.S. but are recommended by many of those who ride.

Tattoos Say it All

Trying to figure him out is like trying to understand why he feels the urge to adjust his crotch in public – impossible. But his tattoo may provide a rare glimpse into his psyche and mating instincts.

Barbed Wire

Psyche

Your classic wannabe tough guy, he never got over his ’90s crush on silicone-boob icon Pamela Anderson or his fantasies about powering off into the sunset on a Harley-Davidson with his favorite Playboy Playmate.

In Bed

Just like Pam’s character in her cheesy movie Barb Wire, he’s lovably dim-witted and will guarantee you many silly giggles in bed. He will call you ‘babe’ (ad nauseam) and will do his utmost to persuade you to make your acting debut in a home sex tape.

Tribal

Psyche

A powerful individualist fancies himself as a Maori or Celtic warrior. Think Robbie Williams before his obsession with aliens. But like Robbie, who got his Celtic cross for protection from ‘the devil inside him’, he’s all about the hurt and, ultimately, he’s trouble.

In Bed

In touch with his inner Neanderthal and well-versed in ancient bedroom practices, he’ll go at it like a tireless hunter. But after his final grunt of satisfaction don’t be surprised if he unceremoniously turfs you out of his cave and goes on the prowl again.

Eastern Symbols

Psyche

The ultimate jock, he spends hours honing his body and has developed a superficial interest in Eastern mysticism because he’s heard it’s ‘cool’. Think David Beckham, who paid tribute to Posh by having her name tattooed in Hindi script on his arm. It was later revealed that his tattoo spelt ‘Vihctoria’.

In Bed

His hunky physique will provide hours of pleasure initially but his lack of imagination, superficial conversation and squeaky voice will eventually grate.

Lower-Back Tattoos

Psyche

Nothing says ‘commitment issues’ quite like a tramp stamp does. This tattoo is generally favored by women, so you’d be forgiven for thinking he bats for the other team. That would also account for the low-rise jeans and tiny tops he keeps digging out of his closet.

In Bed

Fidelity is not in his relationship vocab. And don’t be surprised if he keeps flipping you over like Heath Ledger did with Michelle Williams’s long-suffering character in Brokeback Mountain.

Black Panther or Tiger

Psyche

These tattoos are the universal symbols for power, masculinity and virility, and any man willing to sport them doesn’t doubt his manhood. (Unless they’re on his genitalia or bum – that’s just trying too hard.)

In Bed

A king in the animal kingdom, he’s out to prove his prowess in the bedroom – and who are you to refuse?

Female Names

Psyche

It could be his mother’s name – (or just ‘Mom’) or his ex-girlfriend’s name – or both. Either way, he has serious issues. His mother is probably the only woman he’ll ever respect and wish he could marry. (Yuck). Are you comfortable having your name added to the other notches on his arm – and bedpost?

In Bed

He enjoys being spanked and will inevitably call out another woman’s name mid-orgasm. Imagine he calls out his mother’s?

Penis Tattoos

Ask yourself whether he had to get his penis erect to have it tattooed. If that doesn’t freak you out then you’ve got to be game for a guy who probably thinks he’s porn star Rob Rotten. It’s refreshing that he’s willing to admit to his penis obsession – but are you really ready to worship it?

Home-Made Tattoos

He’s either been in Prison or he shares a brain cell with the idiot from Jackass: The Movie who had more holes tattooed into him than Swiss cheese while driving around in an off-road buggy on a BMX track.

Full-Body Tattoos

Do you really want to date a guy who’s determined to transform himself into a leopard or a zombie?

Nazi or White-Supremacy Tattoos

Run while you can.

Forget The PS3 Slim, How About a Slim XBox 360?

Over the past few months, much of the talk in the video game industry has surrounded Sony and its rumored PlayStation 3 Slim. The product, if it exists, promises to be smaller and, more importantly, cheaper.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m excited about the possibility of the Slim hitting store shelves. I’ve called on Sony multiple times to drop the price of the PlayStation 3. I believe that it’s the key to Sony staying relevant during this generation of game consoles.

But as the PS3 Slim kept us guessing, a report hit the Web on Wednesday claiming that Microsoft might be planning to ditch the Xbox 360 Pro in favor of offering just two Xbox 360 models–the Arcade and the Elite. Great. But what about a refresh?

The Xbox 360 is a beast. It’s huge. Its DVD drive is extremely loud. And its power supply is both big and heavy.

The Xbox 360 is also not nearly as reliable as competing products. Since its release, we’ve been inundated with story after story about the “red ring of death”–an issue that occurs when three red rings around the Xbox 360’s power buttons start flashing, indicating that the console is inoperable and will need to be shipped back to Microsoft to have it fixed.

The number of reported RROD instances has dropped in recent months, but it has left Microsoft with a black eye from which it has yet to recover.

So as Sony improves its hardware offerings, I think that it’s clear that Microsoft needs to do the same. It needs a slim Xbox 360.

Why it’s necessary

I think that a slim Xbox 360 would help solve almost all of Microsoft’s problems. It would potentially fit nicely into existing home theater set-ups. If it lived up to its name, the Slim would also ditch the power brick. Its new power supply would be smaller and much more manageable. Those two updates alone would make many current Xbox 360 owners happy.

But it goes beyond that. A slim Xbox 360 can be Microsoft’s “do-over.” It will address the issues the console has experienced, like that awfully loud DVD drive. It will also fix the Xbox 360’s failure issues that just don’t seem to go away. More importantly, it could address one of the console’s biggest shortcomings: a lack of an HD drive.

Yes, I believe that a slim Xbox 360 should feature a Blu-ray drive. I know that it would be like giving money to the enemy, format backer Sony, but given Blu-ray’s rise in popularity this year, I don’t think that Microsoft has much of a choice. Until streaming HD content has reached critical mass and entered millions of homes, Blu-ray is still the leading, next-gen home entertainment format.

Although we can currently access streaming content through the Xbox 360, it’s not enough. A Blu-ray drive allows Microsoft to fend off Sony’s core argument, which states that because the PlayStation 3 has a Blu-ray drive, it’s worth its $400 price tag. It’s a valid argument. It’s also an argument to which Microsoft, without a Blu-ray drive in its Xbox 360, doesn’t have an answer. That’s unacceptable.

Looking ahead

At this point, I have no doubt that Sony will be releasing the PS3 Slim sometime in the near future. It makes perfect sense for the company, since it’s trying desperately to regain lost market share.

Microsoft should follow suit. The Xbox 360 is a great console. I enjoy playing games on it. But it’s not perfect. It’s in desperate need of a refresh. And a slim Xbox 360 might just be the way to make more consumers happy. More importantly, it could help Microsoft fend off Sony’s rise in the market if a PS3 Slim is released.

Race Pro Xbox 360

More motorsport madness on the 360.

Racing titles are not in short supply for the Xbox 360. Forza Motorsport 2, Race Driver GriD, Sega Rally, Colin McRae DiRT, Project Gotham Racing, Ridge Racer 6, Test Drive Unlimited, Pure, Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed: Undercover are all available for you to enjoy on your favorite console.

The majority of those titles are arcade orientated, meaning that realism is thrown out the window for fantasy racing. Race Pro ventures in the opposite direction, a direction that is very tricky to master and has only been perfected by Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo on console.

Race Pro has some big shoes to fill. Developing a racer to merge with other racer simulation titles means that comparisons are drawn on anything that isn’t exactly correct. Cars must handle like they do in real life and the visual details, with the power of current consoles, are scrutinized if not entirely accurate. Seeing that the developers make a success of those bits, customization of gear ratios, tire compounds and engine modification, to name a few, will be next on the list for simulation critics to loathe or admire. Race Pro is not exactly a master of all the above-mentioned simulation criteria, but it is a Jack-of-all-trades.

If you’re anything like us, you will skip the Single Race Mode and jump right into the more beefy Career Mode. Career Mode follows a similar route to previous Toca Touring Car racers, where you have to buy a contract to become a race driver and earn credits to buy other contracts, upgrading the level of cars you race as you make your way up the ladder.

Once you have bought your first contract (which forces you to drive a Mini Cooper), it is on to the racetrack. The lights go out, you fly past all competitors from your grid position (right at the back), and leave them in your dust… well, until the first corner approaches. Inevitably you will hit your brakes too late, drive off the road and go over the gravel, ending up in last place for the remainder of the race. It is very, very difficult, simply because it’s so realistic. Has Race Pro gone a bit far with simulation? Is it actually still a game?

After the first corner we were ready to pack the game up and call it a day. Arcade racer games have made us far too lazy to practice and get good at anything. We want to be spoon-fed. But we gritted our teeth and selected the restart option. Having dealt with the blow to our egos, we tackled the game.

Once the event, comprising three races, has been concluded you are awarded credits to purchase your next contract. There are 13 real-life tracks to race on including Monza and Laguna Seca, a stunning 350 car models – ranging from Audis to Formula 3000 vehicles – and 12-player (online or systemlink) multiplayer games. Like all simulations, everything is done realistically, but unfortunately the visual department fails miserably.

When comparing Race Pro to Forza Motorsport 2, it seems that Race Pro missed an event in the genre that took place two years ago. Car models look decent but not great, the tracks are realistic but have been done before, and the handling is respectable but not perfect – as we now expect from a simulation. Everything is in place, but it lacks currency – it’s all old news.

Deep inside this package, there is a game that wants to shine, but it wants you to suffer before you enjoy it, and is similar to F-Zero GX when it comes to the difficulty curve. Race Pro is a respectable add-on to your collection of racers and it’s probably a good idea to pick this up if you have been dying for another simulation.
